Scrolling Prototypes allow you to create realistic prototypes that more closely resemble a finished product. For example, you can create app prototypes that mimic scrolling lists.
To create a prototype that will scroll vertically when you preview it:
- Start by inserting an Artboard Template, which will define the size of the fixed window that your prototype will show in (the viewport).
- Increase the height of your Artboard template (notice that it is now marked as “(resized)” in the Inspector) and add extra layers that will scroll within the viewport.
- Preview your prototype to see how your resized Artboard and the layers within it scroll inside the viewport.
- You can create and add fixed elements to your scrolling prototypes like tab and menu bars.
Basic steps to create a scrolling prototype
If you don’t use a template and draw a custom Artboard instead, your prototype won’t scroll and will appear zoomed out when played in the app, on the web app and in the Sketch iPhone app.
To create a scrolling prototype from an Artboard Template, select your template and increase its height on the canvas. When you do this the template name in the Inspector changes to include the word Resized. Sketch comes with Artboard Templates for common devices but you can also create your own Artboard Templates.
You can enhance your Scrolling Prototypes by using Fixed elements to create common elements like Tab bars and fixed menus that remain in place while other elements of the prototype scroll.
