iOS app

With Sketch — View & Mirror, you can use your iPhone or iPad to browse your Workspace(s), view documents, test prototypes and mirror designs as you edit them in the Mac app.

Requirements

To use the app, you’ll need:

  • An iPhone running iOS 16.0 or later, or an iPad running iPadOS 16.0 or later
  • A Sketch account with access to one or more Workspaces
  • An internet connection
  • Edit permissions documents for any documents you want to mirror

Although the app requires an internet connection, you don’t need to be connected to the same Wi-Fi network at your Mac to mirror a document you’re editing. Also, Workspace documents you’ve previously opened will still be available to browse if you are no longer connected to the internet.

Getting started

Once you’ve installed and launched the app, choose Sign in and enter your Sketch account details. These are the credentials you use to sign into the web app and (if you’re an Editor) the Mac app to view/edit documents in your Workspace. If your Workspace is set up with SSO, you can choose Sign in with SSO instead.

If you need to sign out and sign in to a different account/Workspace, tap on the Workspace icon in the top-right corner, tap Account Settings, and then tap Sign Out.

Because Sketch — View & Mirror uses our Workspaces technology to power document mirroring, it does not support Mac-only licenses.

Browsing Workspaces

Once you’ve signed in, you’ll see all the documents and Projects in your Workspace. If you have multiple Workspaces associated with your Sketch Account, tap on the Workspace icon in the top-right corner to switch between them.

To open a document, tap on its thumbnail. Larger documents may take a moment to open while they download. To cancel opening a document, tap on the thumbnail again.

In the Workspace view, you’ll see some or all of the following rows of document thumbnails:

  • From My Mac (if you’re currently editing a document from the same Workspace on your Mac)
  • All Documents
  • Shared with Me (if anyone has shared a document directly with you)
  • My Drafts (if you have saved any drafts)

You can horizontally scroll through these thumbnails or click on See All to view the documents as a grid.

Scroll below the the horizontal document rows to see any Projects you’ve created in your Workspace. Tap on a Project’s name to view all of the documents and any Collections in that Project.

If a Project you’re viewing has any Collections, you can tap on them to view the documents in that Collection. Tap Back to return to the Project view (if you’re browsing a Collection) or the Workspace view (if you’re browsing a Project).

At the top of each Project and Collection view, you’ll see a search field to help find documents in that Project or Collection. To search for documents in the Workspace view, you’ll need to scroll up slightly from the top of the view to reveal the search bar.

If you lose your internet connection, you’ll see a row of documents you’ve previously downloaded — you can still open and browse these offline.

In the sidebar on the left, you can switch between All Documents, My Drafts (if you have created any), Shared With Me (if others have shared documents directly with you), and any Projects you’ve created in your Workspace.

To view documents in a Project, tap on the Projects name in the sidebar. If your Project contains any Collections, you’ll see these at the top of the Project view. Tap on a collection to view the documents inside it.

If you’re viewing a Collection, you can tap on the Project name (above the Collection title) to return to the Project view.

To search for a specific document, use the search field in the top-right corner. Search results are filtered based on the view you’ve selected in the sidebar, so (for example) if you’re viewing a specific project, searching here will only give you results from that project.

If you lose your internet connection, you’ll see a row of documents you’ve previously downloaded — you can still open and browse these offline.

Viewing Documents

Once you’ve opened a document, you can swipe horizontally to move between the different Artboards on the current page. You can also tap on the Artboard previews in the sheet at the bottom of the document (tap once anywhere on your screen if you don’t see the sheet).

In the sheet at the bottom of the screen, you can tap on page names to navigate between the different pages in your document and see the Artboards within them.

Swipe up on the sheet to see more of the document’s contents, such as any Prototypes it includes. Swipe down on the sheet to minimize it. To hide the sheet, along with any other UI, tap once on the screen (and tap again to bring it back).

To share a document’s link with others, tap the Export (Share icon).

When you’ve finished viewing a document, tap the X in the top-left corner to return to close it.

When you’re viewing a Workspace document that others are editing, you’ll be able to see any updates they make as soon as they make them. There’s no need to refresh or reopen the document.

Once you’ve opened a document, you’ll see a full Canvas view, much like you’d see in the Mac app. Drag around the screen to pan and pinch to zoom in or out. You’ll see both Artboards and content outside of them.

To switch between pages in your document, tap the pill at the top-center of your screen and tap on the name of the page you want to switch to.

To share a document’s link with others, tap the Export (Share icon).

Previewing prototypes

When you’re viewing a document, swipe up on the sheet at the bottom of screen to view any prototypes below the Artboard thumbnails. Tap on a Prototype to start the prototype player.

As you test a prototype, tapping outside of hotspots and links on the screen will reveal hints.

To exit a prototype, tap and hold anywhere on the screen to return to the document view.

When you’re viewing a document, tap on the Preview (play) button in the top-right corner of the screen to start playing its prototype. If there are multiple prototypes in the document, tap on the one you want to play from the list that appears.

To exit a prototype, tap and hold anywhere on the screen to return to the document view.

Mirroring Workspace documents

If you’re working on a document in the Mac app, you’ll see it listed under From Your Mac in the Workspace view. Tap on the document’s thumbnail to open it, then tap on the Mirror (iPhone) (Mirror) icon to start mirroring.

When you switch between Artboards and make edits in the Mac app, those changes will reflect in real-time in the iOS app.

Mirroring requires an internet connection on both your Mac and iPhone, but they do not have to be physically tethered via USB or even share the same Wi-Fi network.

Although we do not currently support mirroring on the iPad, you can still open documents that you’re editing on the Mac (via the From Your Mac list in the Workspace view) and see changes you make to those documents in real-time on the Canvas view on your iPad.

We hope to bring the full mirroring experience to iPad soon!

Opening local documents

You can open local Sketch documents via the Files app on your device, or from another app such as Google Drive or Dropbox. In the files app, you can also press on a Sketch document’s thumbnail to use Quick Look to preview it.

Local documents won’t update in real-time and you won’t be able to use mirroring with them.

Opening documents via Handoff

You can use Apple’s Handoff feature to quickly open a document you’re editing on your Mac on your iPhone/iPad or vice versa.

To do this, you’ll need to be running Sketch on all of your devices and they’ll need to follow Apple’s requirements for Handoff (such as being signed into the same iCloud account).

Real-time updates

When you’re viewing a Workspace document in the iOS app that someone else is editing in the Mac app, you’ll see any changes they make as updates in real-time. As the iOS app is for viewing documents and prototypes only, you won’t be able to edit or collaborate in real-time. To edit documents in real-time, open them in the Mac app.

Viewing older documents

If you open a document created using an earlier version of the Mac app, you will need to pick from the following options:

  1. Update and Open - updates the document in the Workspace, this will update the document for everyone and they will need to use the most recent version of the Mac app to open and edit it. You will see any updates made by other Editors working on the document in real-time.
  2. Update as Local Copy - updates the document and opens it locally. This will only update the document for your current session in the iOS app. You will not see any real-time updates made by Editors.
  3. Cancel - stops opening the document.
